Well, what do you know. That boozer had been wrong after all. She supposed she should have followed her gut, and not some obviously wasted man's advice. "Oh yes, Henderson is practically zombie free! All of them have flocked to Vegas by now so you're fine." Fine? Ha, that made her laugh. She was definitely not fine, nope not at all. Everywhere she turned she saw another one. Every time she noticed another, she caught her breath and slunk away in the opposite direction, only to be standing 10 feet away from another one. Good god, why why why did she have such bad luck? It really was upsetting. She never caught a break. All she wanted was to find her brother for God's sake!
St. Rose was a pretty street, sure. It had lovely floral adornments on either sides of the pavement, and beautiful buildings that held a wide variety of stores and housing. If it weren't for the literal hordes of zombies that shuffled about, Birdy could definitely see herself visiting this place.
Birdy probably couldn't place all of the blame on that lonely alcoholic for coming here. She had to to reach the CDC. A place she hoped held her young brother. To get there, she had to pass obstacles. Henderson was on such obstacle. But, she had miscalculated just how infested Henderson really was. They were more abundant here than in Vegas it seemed. Perhaps because this place was a tad more residential. It didn't help that the hospital was releasing a new zombie to walk the earth every ten minutes. Birdy grimaced at the thought of how many zombies were within its walls. Thank god her brother had not been in there, or her hope would surely be lost.
Birdy continued down the main street, taking cover whenever a zombie ran by. She was fortunate enough to be traveling in heavy garments that covered most of her sent. The foul goop that stained her sweatshirt also gave her an excellent cover. No zombie would try attacking someone who smelled like they did. They weren't that kind of cannibalistic. Birdy crept out of her hiding spot carefully, her breathing quieted to a point where even she couldn't hear it. Good thing these trees weren't pollinating, or she'd be having a fit of sneezing.
The sun began to sink lazily into the horizon. As it did so, it threw hues of orange, pink and red that stained the light blew sky. It certainly was quite beautiful. The lack of artificial light around the parkway made it even more so, but now was not the time to sit and watch the sunset. She had to keep traveling. The darkness would make her extremely vulnerable, which meant finding a safe haven was a necessity. Birdy glanced around meagerly. Nothing seemed defensible or even big enough for hiding. She scratched her grimy head. Perhaps if she traveled a bit more until the sun was all the way gone?
Well, it wasn't a choice. She had to do it that way or else she'd be hiding in a warehouse with a huge chance of being spotted and then devoured. Birdy scanned the premises. Three figures were before her in the street. They all wandered aimlessly, sniffing at the air on occasion. She would either have to sneak around them, or kill them each with her tiny tool. She didn't really have the energy to do either one. Birdy sighed in frustration, and backed into a sweet-smelling evergreen. The scent should keep the trio from getting curious as she tried to problem-solve.
Why was every situation she had to get herself in always so...sticky?
Birdy stood there for minutes. The minutes felt like hours, though as her anxiety grew with every inch of the light she lost to the falling sun. It would be dark soon. And for all she knew, it was her versus the entire city of Henderson.
She didn't really like those odds at all.
